2020-2022

In February 2020 the Council approved a Development Framework which sets out the vision and key principles that will serve as guidance for all those who wish to develop in the area.

In May 2021, the iconic Granton Gasholder was lit up in partnership with Edinburgh College Creative Industries students to celebrate the launch of the regeneration.

In October 2021, the Policy and Sustainability Committee approved Granton Waterfront’s Outline Business Case to proceed with the next phase of the project.

 

The Council also welcomed UK Government Levelling Up Funding to restore the Granton Gasholder, unlocking the site for the wider regeneration.

By spring 2022, works began on Granton Station View consisting of 75 net zero carbon homes for social and mid-market rent and three retail units behind Granton Station.

 

Works also began on Western Villages, which sits to the west of Granton Waterfront adjacent to Forthquarter Park, to deliver 444 net zero homes including social rent homes, mid-market rent and homes for sale.

By summer 2022, the Council had appointed Cruden Group to drive forward Phase One of Granton Waterfront, including producing detailed designs for around 750 net zero homes for sale and rent, commercial space, new and enhanced sustainable transport infrastructure and public realm.

 

Planning was also approved for the Silverlea site to deliver 142 high quality sustainable homes, including wheelchair-accessible ground-floor dwellings in a mix of social rent and mid-market rent homes.

 

2023 – 2025

In March 2023, restoration works to Granton Station and Granton Station Square were complete and the building opened up to the public for the first time in a century. This marked the first major milestone of the regeneration.

In November 2023, we appointed Vattenfall Heat UK Ltd to undertake pre-development work to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain a low-carbon heat network serving the development.

In summer 2024, the Phase One detailed planning application was submitted for 847 net zero homes, 46% of which are affordable. 2,249sqm of ground floor commercial space, a transport mobility hub and active travel network. Site enabling works will also be carried out for a primary school and low carbon heat network energy centre.

 

Works also commenced on Silverlea, which will bring 143 homes for social and mid-market rent.
